Making my 3rd platformer
Hey guys, Change The Channel is my 3rd platformer. With each game I try to set a goal and a few things I want to learn and practice.
GOALS
- Character design
This is my favourite part of game development. I love drawing and animating my own characters. I feel like I've done a pretty good job with the playable tv in this game.
- Spend more time on the environment's visuals
In Marty McJump, my previous game, I mostly used basic shapes and textures for the platforms and background. In this new game, I wanted to practice drawing and designing my own world. The platforms were made using a free Unity asset called Shapes2D. I then animated the shapes to create interesting backgrounds while keeping it simple.
- Switch cameras in Cinemachine
I finally learned how to switch cameras in game using this tutorial. This allows me to have several rooms in the same scene. I need to expand on it in the future.
- Use PlayMaker
During the Spring Sale, I picked up PlayMaker on the asset's store. I heard so much about this tool that I really wanted to give it a shot. I've just started using it but it's an interesting tool that I will definitely use more in other games. In Change the Channels I used it for moving platforms and game objects (magnets).
- Gamepad controls
I'm happy to say that I finally managed to get both keyboard and gamepad controls (DPAD and joystick) to work in the game. I even went back and implented it in my previous games !
CHALLENGES
I had a hard time finding the right balance between making the game look good and it being fun to play. I feel like, this game is visually an improvement over my previous ones but it's not as fun as Marty McJump.
For my next game, I would like to spend more time using Cinemachine (camera switch and container) and Playmaker (triggers, doord, iterations, ...)
